Juan Atkins and the Beginnings of Detroit Techno

Detroit techno is in a strange position. It helped to birth electronic dance music culture, yet remains relatively unknown to the general public. But in a world littered with “popular” punk bands and homogenized jock jams, is it really a surprise that true techno remains at the peripheries of mainstream culture?

The sound and ethics of Detroit techno began with Charles “Mojo” Johnson’s Electrifyin’ Mojo radio show (otherwise referred to as The Midnight Funk Association), which was a free form show blending European electronic music with American funky soul. Johnson’s show gained legendary status with the people of Detroit for it’s unparalleled soulful approach to programming.

In the words of a fan, “I discovered there was a method to his madness. Mojo was practicing a philosophy he called “counter-clockwiseology.”

Mojo recalls, “When I first got to Detroit, it was like apartheid on the dial,” calling it, “ separatist radio.”

So Mojo decided he would desegregate radio. It was brilliant and obviously way before his time.  In 1982 “counter-clockwiseology” had inner city black kids in the streets all around the city dancing to David Bowie, Thomas Dolby, Devo and Visage.

Never happened before and hasn’t happened since (. . . )

In this way The Electrifying Mojo was in fact revolutionary in that he tore down how an entire generation of Detroit area kids saw music. He tore down what we came to expect from radio. And what he put in its place was an appreciation for music that went way beyond what traditional radio programming could ever give.

Johnson made a big impact on the young people of Detroit, pushing cutting edge new and old music at a time when Top 40 disco and rock were overtaking the airwaves. Unfortunately, the same fearlessness and creativity that made Mojo popular also caused him to get fired frequently for not obeying the demands of commercial radio.

His refusal to compromise the spiritual integrity of Music for the sake of a job allowed the spirit of Detroit techno to manifest. It did so by influencing a young musician by the name of Juan Atkins — a quiet kid with a futuristic attitude towards music and technology. Atkins heard a world of possiblity in the proto synth funk of Funkadelic and the electronic New Wave sounds, and he channelled that vision in his first band, Cybotron.

“My concept was that the Kraftwerks, Telexes and Devos were good but they weren’t funky. I felt that if I could take that type of music and add a funky element to it then it would be a smash. We did that, but we just didn’t get recognised.  Soul Sonic Force came along and beat us to it.”

Cybotron blended these musical ideas with the concepts of Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock — a novel assigned to be read by Atkins in a high school class called “Future Studies”. In Toffler’s book, “techno-rebels” were the “groups who mastered technology yet refused to let it separate them from their past roots or essential humanity.” This play on Toffler’s concepts is mostly responsible for the prevalence of the word Techno today.

Due to differences in opinion about the increasingly Rock trajectory of Cybotron, Atkins left the project in 1985 to pursue the development of his record label, Metroplex Records, and his techno solo project, Model 500. These new pursuits allowed him the opportunity to control the direction of his work and help develop the Detroit techno sound at large. This activity inspired his friends Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson — together called the Belleville Three — to develop their own sound and record labels, to which Atkins often lent technical assistance and contributed many crucial mixes/remixes.

The work of the Belleville Three — frequently called the first wave of Detroit techno, along with a select group of friends, most of whom were involved in the Deep Space dj crew — became the blueprint for the future waves to come. Detroit labels such as Underground Resistance, Planet E, and Plus 8 (and even Warp Records abroad) were heavily inspired by the unique visionary output of the first wave. Underground Resistance particularly echoed the ethics of Atkins’ futurist, revolutionary approach — expounding on the idea of revolutionary mutant R9 gene in the legendary compilation, Interstellar Fugitives, and taking the facelessness of Detroit techno to new heights. Drexciya in particular — a mysterious and now hugely popular group on the Underground Resistance label — was deeply influenced by Atkins’ aesthetics, and took them to the next level in the development of their own Sci-fi concept that narrates their extensive body of work.

The manifestation and evolution of Detroit techno is an extremely important part of the history of music. Detroit’s “machine soul” comes from an uncompromising love of funky soulful music, a fascination with the sonic possibilities of music machines, and the dream of another place, far away from this world of confusion and injustice. Atkins admits,

“The music is not for everybody. It’s for certain people that want a little twist. Some people are perfectly content with the everyday pop – they don’t have an open enough mind to consider something new. Those aren’t the people I’m playing for; they’ll come around eventually.”

</ JUAN ATKINS \>

Juan is frequently called “the Godfather of Techno”. He is credited with having started the techno scene in Detroit — the first “techno scene” in the history of music — with his first musical project, Cybotron. The period following Atkins entrance into the Detroit music scene is commonly called the “first wave of Detroit Techno”, which heavily influenced the future generations of American electronic music and electronic music abroad. Events like the Detroit Electronic Music Festival are a continuation of Atkins’ legacy.

Following his departure from Cybotron, Atkins went on to create the hugely influential Metroplex record label — releasing groundbreaking solo records under a number of different aliases, as well as records by many of Detroit’s significant techno innovators. His primary solo project Model 500 continues to this day, and is widely respected for its continued quality output — maintaining his progressive attitude towards music technology and still gaining new fans.

Atkins’ DJ crew, Deep Space, was one of Detroit’s most influential and cutting edge, bringing together all the major players in Detroit Techno, and setting the precedent for the legendary “Music Institute”
